Gulam is an Associate within the Firm’s Litigation Department. His focus area of practice is corporate commercial litigation and arbitration.

Gulam has appeared and assisted in a number groundbreaking cases in the fields of commercial arbitration, banking and finance, succession disputes, and construction law.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has previously worked as a Consultant for the East Africa Law Society and the Business Law Clinic at Makerere University. While studying for the Bar, Gulam clerked for a Justice of the Uganda Supreme Court.

Gulam holds an LL.B (Hons) degree from Makerere University and a First-Class Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre where he was the recipient of the Attorney General’s Award.

  • Part of a team that successfully acted for the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited in resisting a challenge to the enforcement in Uganda of its USD153 million foreign arbitral award against AYA Investments (U) Ltd, the proprietor of the Pearl of Africa Hotel. The resisted challenge involved questions of arbitrability of the dispute, alleged inability to participate in the arbitral proceedings, allegations of bias, and other issues all of which were resolved in favour of the client.
  • Part of a team that successfully acted for the Uganda Bankers Association and thirty commercial banks in a Constitutional Petition by which the Constitutional Court quashed attempts by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to compel all commercial banks to divulge to it en masse the private information of all their customers and those customers’ personal and financial data contrary to the constitutional right to privacy.
  • Part of a team acting for a Canadian listed investment firm in a US$20m arbitration dispute against the Government of Uganda pertaining to mining concessions.
  • Part of a team that successfully acted for Stellar Properties Limited in arguing before the Uganda Commercial Court that although a Contract underlying the dispute contained a valid arbitration clause, there was no genuine dispute to refer to arbitration as the Defendant Uganda Government parastatal was incontestibly indebted to our client for UGX5.7Bn in rental arrears.
  • Part of a team acting for a Uganda government parastatal in an application to set aside an arbitration award on the basis that it was issued contrary to public policy through endorsement of a breach of mandatory procurement law.
